tado° X speaks Matter over Thread, so each device can join Apple Home on its own and be
controlled over your home network. Here is what you need and how to do it, from tado°'s and Apple's own
instructions.
What you need
The tado° X devices, switched on: Smart Radiator Thermostat X, Smart Thermostat X or
Wireless Temperature Sensor X. Bridge X and Heat Pump Optimizer X don't appear in Apple Home; they keep
working for the tado° app.
An iPhone or iPad on iOS or iPadOS 16.4 or later, on the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi as your
Bridge X or Apple home hub, with Bluetooth on.
Thread in Apple Home: a HomePod mini, a HomePod (2nd generation), an Apple TV 4K
(2nd generation) or an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet. The Wi-Fi-only 64 GB Apple TV 4K
(3rd generation) and older Apple TVs have no Thread.
An iPhone 15 Pro or later on iOS 18 can talk to Thread devices by itself, but only while it is at home.
A home hub is what lets you change a room from elsewhere and run automations.
If the device is already in the tado° app
In the tado° app, go to Settings → Rooms & Devices and choose the device.
Choose Matter Connections → Connect another app and follow the prompts. The tado° app
shows a Matter setup code.
In Apple's Home app, tap +, then Add Accessory. Tap
More options if it offers it, and scan or enter that code.
Pick the room and the name.
If the device is new
In the Home app, tap +, then Add Accessory.
Scan the Matter setup QR code that came with the device.
Pick the room and the name.
Add the devices one by one: each thermostat or sensor is its own accessory.
Put each device in its tado° room
Give every device the same room in Apple Home as in the tado° app. tado° recommends it because Siri then
understands which room you mean. It also matters to any app that reads its rooms from Apple Home: a Home room
holding devices from two different tado° rooms is ambiguous, and Tepi, for one, locks such a room rather than
guess which radiator a change is meant for.
What works, and what doesn't
Temperature and on/off work in the Home app, with Siri and in automations.
Hot water isn't part of tado°'s Matter integration.
Schedules stay in tado°. A temperature set from Apple Home counts as a manual change in
tado°. Depending on how long the tado° app keeps manual changes for that room, it can stop the room
following its schedule until something hands it back — and nothing in the Home app says so.
Batteries: tado° says that adding a device to several Matter platforms may shorten
battery life slightly; the tado° app plus one other platform shouldn't make a noticeable difference.
“Thread Border Router Required”
The Home app shows this when none of your Apple devices can reach a Thread network. Add a HomePod mini,
a HomePod (2nd generation) or a Thread-capable Apple TV 4K to your home, then add the device again.
Then use Tepi
Tepi reads your rooms from Apple Home, so once your tado° X devices are there it shows them as rooms —
beside any tado° V3+ rooms — with the temperature, whether the radiator is heating, and Boost and Off, all
over your home network. No tado° sign-in is needed for that. Sign in, and Tepi can also hand a room back to its
tado° schedule after a change, and show each device's battery and firmware.
